BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Beijing plans over the next four years to evacuate more than 28,450 farmers living in the mined-out area in its seven mountainous counties, which is vulnerable to mud-rock flows, the municipal government announced Thursday.
The municipal government will provide each farmer a subsidy of 10,000 yuan (some 1,200 US dollars) to help them start a business and get vocational training. Meanwhile, the county government will in turn raise special funds to help the evacuees resettle, said Li Jinshan, director of the municipal agricultural commission.
"After being resettled, the farmers' income is expect to increase 40 percent over what they currently earn," said Li.
The evacuation will also help improve the capital's environmentas nearly 560 creeks and streams in the 3,000-square-meter mountainous area will be well protected, said Li.
More than 9,900 families live in the mined-out areas in the counties of Fangshan, Mentougou, Changping, Yanqing, Huairou, Miyun and Pinggu and their life is in the shadow of strong mud-rock flow as well as water shortage and transport and communication inconvenience, added Li.
As a crucial part of the municipal government's strategy to guarantee the safety and increase the income of the rural residents in mountainous areas, Beijing has invested 422 million yuan (about 50 million US dollars) over the past few years to displace 84,000 residents from 980 mountainous villages.
